Bendigo Kangan Institute
The refurbishment of Building A at the Cremorne Campus of Bendigo Kangan Institute was more than a structural overhaul, it was a transformation of space and purpose. Designed to support new ways of learning and working, the 1,000m² project delivered a contemporary educational environment that fosters collaboration, wellness, and inclusion.
Barpa Construction, a leading Indigenous-owned construction company, managed the delivery of the project, ensuring Indigenous participation was integrated into every stage of the process. Winya was selected as one of the furniture partner for this project, tasked with delivering solutions that not only fulfilled functional needs but also reflected cultural significance and Country-based identity.

Scope of Work
Winya Indigenous Commercial Furniture was engaged to supply and install a full suite of commercial furniture for the refurbishment of Building A at Bendigo Kangan Institute’s Cremorne campus. In collaboration with Barpa Construction, the fitout included ergonomic workstations, meeting chairs, and soft seating to support a productive and collaborative educational environment. Select items, including custom high-back lounges and Saba meeting chairs, were upholstered in digitally printed Indigenous-designed fabrics from our House Artist Progran to embed cultural awareness into the everyday space. The result is a functional, inclusive environment that balances modern educational needs with meaningful representation of Indigenous culture - all delivered within the project’s three-month construction timeline.
Cultural and Social Impact
Winya’s role in this project extended beyond simply supplying furniture. Through our ongoing House Artist Program, every piece upholstered in Indigenous fabric contributed to a broader initiative of embedding cultural design into daily life.
The digitally printed fabrics feature artworks created by Aboriginal artists, allowing staff and students to interact with culture in a tactile, visible way. It’s not just decoration - it’s representation, recognition, and education woven into the very fabric of the built environment.
Working alongside Barpa amplified the cultural significance of the project, ensuring that Indigenous businesses were involved at multiple levels: from construction to furniture fitout. Barpa achieved a 6% Indigenous business spend on the project, contributing to tangible social procurement outcomes.
Outcome
The result is a refreshed, future-focused campus building that balances professional utility with human connection. Each corner of the space, from breakout lounges to meeting rooms, is underpinned by thoughtful furniture choices that support both the function of the institution and its values.
Winya is proud to have contributed to a space where students, staff, and community members can gather, learn, and collaborate, surrounded by furniture that is practical, sustainable, and deeply meaningful.
