ANZ Branches - National Roll Out

In a pioneering effort to redefine banking environments, ANZ has embarked on a nationwide initiative to transform its branches into spaces that embody sustainability, community engagement, and cultural acknowledgment. Central to this transformation is the collaboration with Breathe Architecture and Winya Indigenous Furniture, aiming to create branch designs that are 100% carbon-neutral in operations and resonate with the local communities they serve.

Design Philosophy and Implementation

The project, aptly named "ANZ Breathe," is built upon a modular design system that allows each branch to be assembled like interlocking pieces, facilitating adaptability and scalability across various locations. This approach ensures that the design can be tailored to different spatial requirements while maintaining a cohesive aesthetic and functional standard.

Materials selected for the branches are natural, locally sourced, and environmentally friendly. The use of FSC-certified timbers, cork, recycled aluminum light fittings, and rubber flooring made from repurposed car tires underscores the commitment to sustainability. Additionally, the integration of abundant greenery through biophilic design principles enhances the mental and physical well-being of both staff and customers, creating a welcoming and calming atmosphere.

Winya Indigenous Furniture's Contribution

Winya Indigenous Furniture has been instrumental in bringing the interior design vision to life by providing bespoke furniture solutions that align with the project's sustainability goals and cultural sensitivity. Their contributions include:

  • Custom Timber Furniture: Crafted from sustainably sourced Australian hardwood, the furniture pieces are designed for durability and minimal environmental impact. The modular nature of the furniture allows for flexibility and reusability, aligning with the project's adaptive design philosophy.

  • Signage Integration: To minimise material usage, signage is thoughtfully incorporated directly onto the timber furniture, reducing the need for additional materials and maintaining a clean, cohesive aesthetic.

Recognition and Impact

The "ANZ Breathe" project has garnered significant recognition within the architectural and design communities, reflecting its innovative approach to sustainable commercial design:

  • Awards: The project has been honored with several accolades, including the Allan and Beth Coldicutt Award for Sustainable Architecture at the 2022 Victorian Architecture Awards and a Silver award in the Commercial Architecture category at the 2023 Better Future Australian Design Awards.

  • Community Engagement: By collaborating with Indigenous-owned businesses like Winya, the project not only supports local economies but also fosters cultural representation and acknowledgment within corporate spaces.
